  • Not tasted Hoe’s Sauce, and would appreciate comments from those who have.
  • Hoe’s Sauce is another legend among brown sauce lovers. Vanished from the marketplace and its loss is much regretted.
  • This is one of the oldest known brown sauce, once considered the best of all and enjoying a royal warrant.
  • If any brown sauce should be reinstated in the market place, then it is this English heritage sauce. Of course, if the recipe has been lost then the sauce is lost forever.
  • Hoe’s Sauce originated in 1854 in Manchester, England, moving to Heywood Farm, Greater Manchester (North West England), in the early 1900s.
  • The paper label featured a goose carrying a bottle.
  • It was taken over by Norco Pickles, in Pendlebury (City of Salford).
  • It was then bought out by Pandora Pickles, based in Middleton Junction.
  • Hoe’s Sauce, once upon a time honoured with the Royal Warrant of Queen Alexandra (wife to King Edward VII), is no longer produced by its most recent owner, an Irish multinational company.
  • It’s previous owners include Norco Pickles, Pandora Pickles, George Henshall of Middleton Junction near Manchester.

My aunt, who lived in Manchester, always brought us a bottle down when she came to visit. Highly treasured and sadly missed!

Is there anything that tastes close

Finest brown sauce on the market, lead HP by a mile more so now HP is made in Europe

I worked for Norco at the time it was bought by them and had sight of the warrant and recipe .the first thing they wanted to make it cheaper!!! as luck would have it we had enough stock bought in. I think it was far superior to that one with parliamentary connections..I hope it is not lost to the nation..

Found what looks like the top of a bottletop embossed Hoe’s Sauce with Regd in the centre – any idea of age it could be

I would support any endeavor to restore Hoe’s Sauce to its rightful place on Super Market shelves, I’ve searched for it for the past ten years! Good luck to any moves to get it re-instated.

A sad loss to the nation! My last bottle was bought in Chester-le-Street Co-op in 2000. I still have the label somewhere, used to try and track down the supplier, to no avail.
How can we get the brand owner to reinstate it?

Public opinion was able to get Hammond’s Chop sauce reinstated, so my suggestion would be a Facebook page explaining the history, how it is sorely missed and then a petition to reinstate. If it takes off then, if Chop sauce is an example, the manufacturers would enjoy the publicity and who knows? But it would be worth a try.

I agree with Chris that this sauce was a sad loss to British Sauce lovers, but unless somebody steps forward who is prepared to lead such a campaign, then this is just a wake to what was considered at one time to be the best sauce of all.
